Tasting Notes: Pear + Chocolate Fudge + Fennel
Coffee production in Papua New Guinea dates back to 1926 when the first Jamaican Blue Mountain seeds were planted. Today, an estimated 87,000 hectares are under coffee cultivation employing around 2.5 million people. The vast majority of coffee is grown on small plots, typically under two hectares per family, which accounts for roughly 90 to 95% of national production. This includes 280,000 smallholder coffee growers with some of the local farmers planting as little as 20 trees alongside subsistence crops. These farmers are often coping with poor infrastructure, labour shortages, and declining market prices. However, coordination between the private and public sectors has improved—there is now a movement towards better sustainability, enhanced soil nutrition management/retention, and educating farmers in agricultural productivity.
Papua New Guinea organic Siane Chimbu is sourced from farms organized around the Siane Organic Agriculture Co-operative (SOAC) located in the Chuave district within the province of Chimbu. SOAC has access to the international coffee markets and the farmers benefit financially from the direct trade relationships. SOAC also assist farmers with financing, coffee quality control (including product development), organic certification, and community-based projects that promote gender equality and education.
ROASTMASTER NOTES:
On the first sip, a rich, chocolate-fudge body is almost sublime, balanced perfectly with a hint of honeyed pear. On the finish, a mild, fresh-mix of anise and licorice blend beautifully with a subtle, earthy sweetness to compliment this coffee. Brew using your favorite brew method—you don’t want to miss out on this unique and luxuriously rich coffee!
