The Hambela Coffee Estate in Ethiopia is a third-generation family-owned business with a rich history. Muluemebet Emiru became Africa’s first female pilot in 1934. At the end of World War II, the Ethiopian Emperor awarded her with farmland—lush with wild coffee trees—in the Harar and Sidamo regions. With her grandfather’s help, she transformed the Harar farmland into the Hambela Coffee Estate, forever forging the family’s deep connection to the land and coffee cultivation. Generations later, her grandson Aman Adinew, returned to Ethiopia to carry on his family’s legacy.
Aman Adinew, who after many years working abroad at the executive level for multiple fortune 500 companies, returned to Ethiopia because he wanted to make a difference for his family and the community. Through Aman’s leadership, his family has contributed to the betterment of the local community with employment opportunities which include: a workforce that is over seventy percent women; educational opportunities including university scholarships; sponsorship for a state-of-the-art elementary school with more than 700 students; and healthcare for employees.
Included in their efforts is an expanding outgrower program designed to provide technical assistance, share modern farming equipment, and provide certification programs for more than 5,000 local farmers who are paid a premium for their coffee cherries as well as a second payment after coffee is sold. Quality control and certification premiums have also contributed to the building of roads and community centers. They have the first and only private state-of-the-art SCAA certified coffee quality control lab on the African continent used to train both domestic and international coffee professionals.
Coffees are sourced from the SNNPR Region, Gedeo Zone, Gedeb District & Oromia Region, Guji Zone, and the Hambela District. Buyers choose from a wide variety of the finest Ethiopian coffees, either produced or sourced by staff. These coffees are grown and harvested in accordance with unsurpassed quality standards, then graded in their certified coffee quality laboratory.
Our Roast Master has roasted this Guji to a light roast. Notes of delicate fruit, including berries and peach, are followed by a sweet cane sugar and mild lime finish.
